Sweden Hockey Jersey popularity soars
This year has been a good one for the Swedish hockey program. Sweden Jerseys will be well represented internationally. The Swedes took gold at the 2006 Winter Olympics then followed that up a few months later with a World Championship. This was the first time that a country had accomplished this sweep, a particularly surprising achievement considering some of the high-powered national teams that Canada and Russia have produced over the years.
Since Toronto Maple Leafs great Borje Salming first arrived in North America in the ’70s, Sweden has been NHL jerseys with highly skilled players. In the ’80s, players like Mats Naslund, Hakan Loob, Tomas Jonsson, Thomas Steen and Thomas Gradin showed that Swedish players could be skilled and productive in the more rough-and-tumble NHL. Those players paved the way for the likes of Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, Niklas Lidstrom and Markus Naslund in the ’90s, with these four players being the core players in what could be Sweden’s greatest hockey era.
In spite of the success Sweden Hockey jerseys have been extremely popular since Sweden has experienced at the international level since the early ’90s, there seemed to be a slight lessening of the numbers of Swedes making an impact in the NHL during that period. With the exception of the Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik, who were drafted second and third overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 1999, players from Sweden hadn’t made much of a splash at the NHL Draft.
But that downward trend appears to be changing course, as Swedish draft prospects have received more attention in the past three seasons than they have since the Sedins had their names called seven years ago.
